This week (23-27 September 2024) is Falls Prevention Week, a time to focus on preventing falls and ensuring the safety of our elderly community.

Falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults and one of the most common incidents among elderly residents in care homes, leading to severe injuries, hospital admissions and a decline in the overall quality of life for residents. In fact, nearly 50% of care home residents experience at least one fall per year, and many of these incidents result in serious injuries or hospital admissions1. Falls account for 40% of all injury-related deaths among people aged 65 and older.

However, with the right training and support, we can minimise these risks. 50% of falls among elderly care home residents can be prevented with proactive measures and timely interventions. Our Immedicare virtual care service ensures that care home staff receive immediate assistance from NHS clinicians, helping prevent falls and manage care effectively when they occur.

Additionally, we’re proud to partner with care homes to provide comprehensive training that empowers staff to prevent and manage falls effectively. Since May 2022, we have delivered 21 training sessions to 221 individuals working in care homes.

14% of all calls to Immedicare are falls related. But with Immedicare’s support, 90% of residents remain in their care homes after a fall, avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions.
