I’m Gemma, a Pharmacy Technician working in the Immedicare Digital Care Hub. I work closely with Dawn, our pharmacist, to improve medication safety in care homes. Falls prevention is currently one of our biggest priorities and I carry out enhanced patient-centred medication reviews for residents who have fallen where medication is identified as a potential source of harm.  Following the review, we share advice with GP surgeries, who we try to build strong working relationships with.

Recently, I provided advice around reducing a medication associated with an increased risk of falls for a resident who had fallen three times. The GP agreed and since that intervention, the individual has had no further falls.

Before working for Immedicare, I was a Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician in an NHS hospital for 10 years, I was also the education and training lead for Pharmacy Technicians and technical staff.
At Immedicare, I also deliver monthly training sessions to care home staff around medicines management and medicines safety. Training and education are parts of my role I have always enjoyed.

It’s an exciting time to be a Pharmacy Technician. Our role has evolved a lot over the 18 years I have been in the profession, and we are now integral members of healthcare teams working in a range of diverse clinical positions.

My role at Immedicare is really unique. It’s a developing role and while I have a network of Pharmacy Technicians, I don’t know anyone who works in a role quite like mine.

Working in the Digital Care Hub as part of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, I have such a great opportunity to learn from those around me. At Immedicare, we make a real difference to patients – we can truly impact the quality of life of the residents we support.
